Gimme a Pigfoot!
2006. Oil on Canvas. 24" x 18".
£340.00

"Gimme a Pigfoot" was recorded with Buck and his Band, 24 November 1933. NYC. This was Bessie's last recording session, although she still continued to appear successfully on stage.
In the early hours of September 26th 1937, Bessie Smith was killed in a tragic traffic accident, the circumstances of which, are still argued over today. Wikipedia  gives a good summary of her life

Four days after the recording session, Billy Holiday made her first recording in the same studio.

Young Woman Blues

2009. Acrylic on Canvas. 32" x 26"
£500.00
Bessie Smith's wonderful, defiant, yet poignant song, which actually does start with "Woke up this Mornin''", but who cares?

Woke up this mornin' when chickens was crowin' for days.
Felt on the right side of my pilla', my man had gone away.
By this pilla' he left a note readin',
"I'm sorry, Jane, you got my goat.
No time to marry, no time to settle down".
I'm a young woman and ain't done runnin' 'round.
I'm a young woman and ain't done runnin' 'round.
Some people call me a hobo, some call me a bum.
Nobody knows my name, nobody knows what I've done.
I'm as good as any woman in your town.
I ain't no high yeller, I'm a deep killer of brown.
I ain't gonna marry, ain't gonna settle down.
I'm gonna drink good moonshine and rub these browns down.
See that long lonesome road
Lawd, you know it's gotta end
and I'm a good woman and I can get plenty men.

Resonance - The Skiffle Band
2009. Oil on Canvas covered board. 28" x 20"
£350.00

Like practically every other young lad on Merseyside, I was caught up in the Skiffle craze started by Lonnie Donnegan in the mid 50s. We were rubbish, but skiffle did lead me to the original source of this music, so it wasn't all wasted time.  Listen to the Memphis Jug Band's "Memphis Breakdown" to hear the real thing.

Jesse Fuller - San Fransisco Bay Blues
2011. Oil on Canvas. 40 x 50 cm
£250.00
I first heard Jesse Fuller play, sing and dance, in the Cavern Club(Yes!  That one) when he toured the UK in 1959.  With his guitar, mouth organ, kazoo, cymbal and self designed foot bass he was a revelation. Eight years later I was privileged to see him again in Southampton . He was just as impressive, and his "San Fransisco Bay Blues" is still the most joyful, what do you think?l.
