"Dipper Mouth" was young Louis Armstrong's nickname before he became known as "Satchmo". During the first recording of "Dipper Mouth Blues"by Joe Oliver and his Creole Jazz Band in early 1923, Bill Johnson shouted "Oh play that thing!" at the end of Joe's brilliant cornet solo. Why he did it is open to debate, but no subsequent performance of this number is complete without this cry.
