I live on the outskirts of the historic city of Salisbury, just a few minutes walk from the site of the ancient  hill fort of Old Sarum. The city, its Cathedral Close and beautiful surrounding countryside, are a constant source of inspiration.

Old Sarum's west side was overgrown with scrub, under which hardly anything grew. English Heritage recently  cleared it, to the outrage of local ecology groups. It looks awful now, but EH hopes that the scrubbed land will grow back as grassland, more in keeping with the rest of this ancient monument. This painting is based on the "Old Sarum Scrubbed" sketch below, but my main inspiration is   Paul Nash's "We are Building a New World" .
